Be a Courageous Leader
Every human being has something they are afraid of, it could be heights, wild animals, or even giving a speech in public.
As leaders, one of the key skills we must master is being courageous. People look to us for guidance and wisdom on what should be done, especially in the face of adversity. This means that sometimes we have to do things, even when we are afraid.
Sometimes we can find ourselves facing obstacles that may seem too difficult for us. Or we can even feel like we are stepping into uncharted waters. I want to encourage you today to do that thing that you are feeling afraid to do.
Put yourself out there, apply for that new position. You may be surprised what good things are out there just waiting for you.
1. Do it afraid. Do you know what courage is? The actual definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. What is the thing that frightens you? The secret is that you may actually have to do that thing afraid. Don’t let fear hold you back, decide today to do it, even if you are afraid.
2. Speak up when needed. Being a leader can be a tough job at times. Partially because when we see something wrong we have to say something. Having to do this can make many people uncomfortable including ourselves. Try to determine if you are a people pleaser. If so, try to work on doing what’s best versus doing what is comfortable. When we are honest with our employees, they will begin to trust us more. Every time we have a difficult conversation, we will get better at it or at least learn from it. Just know that by having the difficult conversation with the right motives, you are actually helping the other person have an opportunity to improve.
3. Avoid procrastination. If you already know what needs to change, develop a plan to get to your desired end result. Also, set a specific timeframe to get there. Whether you attain your desired goal within the timeframe or not, is not as important as ensuring that you are making progress with intentionality.
Decide today what you want to accomplish in this upcoming year and set a specific timeframe to complete it. Don’t just think about it, actually do it.
